BMJ: Excessive waist fat increases uterine cancer risk

Release date: 2017-03-24

According to the British Guardian, a study found that women with higher waist-to-hip ratios had a higher risk of developing uterine cancer.

A study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that the risk of uterine cancer increased by 21% for every 0.1 increase in waist-to-hip ratio.

The World Cancer Research Foundation (WCRF) partially funded the study, and WCRF experts say the results suggest a strong correlation between cancer and excessive waist circumference.

The waist-to-hip ratio is calculated by using the waist circumference compared to the upper hip circumference. For example, if a person has a waist circumference of 28 feet (71 cm) and a hip circumference of 40 feet (102 cm), then his waist-to-hip ratio is 0.7.

The study found that women with a waist-to-hip ratio increased from 0.7 to 0.8 increased the risk of uterine cancer by 21%. The example given above is equivalent to an increase in her waistline from 28 feet to 32 feet (81 cm), while the hips remain unchanged. If the waist-to-hip ratio is increased by 0.1, the risk of developing uterine cancer will increase.

For women, a waist-to-hip ratio of more than 0.85 is considered obese, which is 0.9 for men.

WCRF estimates that in the UK alone, if people maintain a healthy weight, about 25,000 cancers can be avoided each year.

Professor Konstantinos Tsilidis of Imperial College of Technology said: "These results show that maintaining a healthy weight is very important for women because it can reduce the risk of cancer."

Dr. Panagiota Mitrou, head of research funding at WCRF, said: "We know that too much fat in the waist can cause a range of health problems, such as diabetes, but this important study has taught us that waist fat can also affect cancer risk."

“It’s important to make people aware of the dangers of excessive fat (especially near the waist). In addition to quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight is the best way to prevent cancer.”

The study also found a correlation between waist-to-hip ratio and bowel cancer and pancreatic cancer, but the association was not tight.
