The researchers tested the brain-controlled prosthetic arm on amputated patients and have now confirmed that the patient can simply move the robotic arm and grab a smaller object. The amputated man in the picture is Johnny Matheny, who lost his arm in the 2008 cancer and then began experimenting with innovative robotic arms.
This new prosthetic system replaces the slings required for modular prosthetic (MPL) work, which can cause discomfort to the patient for extended periods of time. Masini has been able to recover many natural movements since wearing this prosthetic limb. In order for this prosthetic to work like a modular prosthetic, the patient must undergo muscle regeneration beforehand.
At first the researchers planned to operate cautiously after Masini's prosthetic installation, but immediately after the prosthetic was installed, he was able to move the robotic arm.
