ORCAS and Cigna collaborate to test the effects of back pain management app

Release date: 2015-01-19

Mobile intervention software FitBack is a personalized health tool that helps users effectively improve non-specific low back pain (NLBP). A joint study by the health intervention app development company ORCAS and the insurance company Cigna confirmed the role of the software and the results were published in the Journal of Medical Network Research.

The American College of Physicians and Pain Association recommends at least one month of multidisciplinary treatment of NLBP, but this method is impractical for many doctors.

ORCAS's treatment is to track the patient's pain level through the app and help them follow a pain management program. The user will get a guide video and text played on the app, and the user can manage and prevent back pain according to the tutorial method. The app can also take into account the user's work factors, whether the user is sitting, standing or driving while at work. Fitback also tracks motion with Fitbit.

ORCAS recruited 597 adult employees for its four-month study. These people come from four companies, including driving companies, manufacturing companies, technology companies and corporate headquarters. Participants were randomly divided into three groups. One group uses the FitBack App, a group of alternative therapies, and ORCAS will send participants 8 emails to provide participants with NBLP online resources. The third group is the control group, but only regular physical examinations.

ORCAS first conducts an initial assessment and then checks the apples separately for two months and four months. Participants will receive $40, $50, and $60 in compensation after three inspections.

After four months, the FitBack group had better physical, behavioral, and work outcome evaluations than the control group. The control group reported that the number of back pain was 1.7 times that of the FitBack group. The replacement therapy group reported that the back pain was 1.6 times that of the FitBack group.

In the final assessment, the back pain rate was 21% in the FitBack group and 41% in the other groups. At the same time, the satisfaction of the FitBack group is higher than the other two groups.

ORCAS researchers said the results showed that the FitBack intervention was not supported by professionals and was not integrated with the health promotion program, but it may provide assistance to participants. At the same time, we need to do more research to understand how self-directed mobile network interventions continue to be used and to understand the factors associated with ongoing user engagement.
