Japan began artificial retinal clinical trial

Release date: 2014-05-26

A professor at the Osaka University School of Medicine in Japan, Mr. Yasuhiro, has recently started a clinical trial of artificial retina that requires the implantation of electrodes into the eye of patients who are close to blindness. It was alleged that the visual acuity of the first patient who underwent the test recovered to the extent that the shape of the object could be discerned.

The research team is scheduled to implement a second operation in June. After confirming the safety and treatment effects, it is planned to be put into practical clinical application on the basis of approval from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan in 2018.

According to reports, this clinical trial is for patients with "retinal pigmentosis". Electrodes are implanted on the posterior side of the patient's eye to apply electrical stimulation to still viable retinal cells and the like.

The artificial retina works by shooting an image with a camera mounted on the glasses and transforming the image into an electrical signal through a device that can be hung on the waist. This signal is then transmitted to the implanted electrode through the device behind the ear, and the visual signal is transmitted to the brain by stimulation of the retina, eventually forming vision. Artificial retinas are currently in clinical use in countries such as the United States and Germany.

The research team implanted the artificial retina into the first patient's eye at the end of January. The patient can only recognize the light and dark before the operation, but after the operation, the patient can not only grasp the long rod in front of the eye, but also recognize the direction of the long rod movement. In 2015-2016, Osaka University plans to cooperate with companies and other universities to conduct formal clinical trials for 10 to 15 patients.

Retinitis pigmentosa can lead to a reduction in visual cells. There are about 10,000 patients in Japan. The artificial retina cannot restore the blindness to the normal person's vision, but at least it can be improved to recognize the shape of the object, etc., making the patient's daily life convenient.

Plant Extract Powder

Plant extracts powder have the characteristics of green, environmental protection, and safety, and it has been emphasized in culture applications, and it has gradually become a research hotspot, and it has gradually become a positive and productive alternative to antibiotics after feed resistance prohibition.

Plant Extract (PE) is a single or mixed substance obtained from plants by physical and chemical means, which contains polyphenols, alkaloids, polysaccharides, essential oils and other active substances. Polyphenols are the most abundant active components of PE, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-tumor activities. Similarly, other components (e.g., flavonoids, alkaloids) have multiple biological functions.
The Catalogue of Feed Ingredients contains 117 natural plant extracts, such as anise oil, basil oil, cinnamon oil, clove bud oil, orange oil, lost essential oil, oregano oil, and thyme essential oil.

Plant extracts powder is rich in bioactive substances, which has the functions of regulating nutrient metabolism, antioxidant, immune regulation, antibacterial and insect repellent. It is a green and healthy additive, and has a good effect on promoting the healthy growth of piglets. It plays an important role in reducing the use of antibiotics and promoting the development of healthy aquaculture.
