Guatemala: Experience in improving the level of surgery for congenital heart disease
The Boston Children's Hospital "Circulation" magazine reported that in 1997 the United States promoted congenital heart disease surgery technology to Guatemala, and achieved remarkable results. Congenital heart disease (CHD), referred to as congenital heart disease, is a malformation caused by abnormal vascular development in the fetal period. It is a group of birth defects with high incidence caused by genetic factors and environmental factors. Larrazabal et al. used a method for assessing the outcome of congenital heart disease (RACHS-1 grading) to compare the mortality statistics of various congenital heart diseases from 1997 to 2004. RACHS-1 is adjusted according to age and type of surgery and is divided into 6 levels. There were 1215 patients enrolled, with an average age of 3.1 years and a total mortality rate of 10.7% (130 cases). The adjusted mortality rate fell from 10.0% in 1997-1999 to 7.8% in 2000-2002 to 5.7% in 2003-2004. It can be seen that through the promotion of technology, the mortality rate of Guatemala congenital heart disease surgery has decreased significantly in the short term. It has also been confirmed that statistical methods for adjusting mortality based on surgical risk (RACHS-1 grading) are also applicable in the evaluation of congenital heart disease in developing countries.
