Using Bacteria to Protect Rice-rice Biopesticides for Practical Application

Japan’s independent administrative agency, the Agricultural Technology Research Institute, announced that it has made the use of rice biopesticides practical. This is the first time in the world. The biopesticides use bacteria to prevent rice disease. The biopesticides will be sold on December 10, 2001. The production of this biological pesticide uses a soil bacterium that was discovered by the Agricultural Technology Research Institute from the rice of its subordinate agricultural research center. It can almost completely prevent "rice blast wilt bacterial disease" and "rice wilting bacterial wilt disease" that causes rice borer to wither. It is said that the biological pesticide is powdery and can maintain its efficacy at room temperature of 25 degrees Celsius for half a year. If it is refrigerated at 5 degrees Celsius, it can be maintained for more than 4 years. Biopesticides have the following advantages: Resistant bacteria are difficult to survive and do not produce effluents. The cost is basically the same as chemical pesticides. It is said that it has been confirmed that this biological pesticide does not harm animals and other crops. Although its mechanism is not yet fully understood, because the bacteria's proliferation is faster than pathogenic bacteria, it captures nutrients and thus inhibits the increase of pathogenic bacteria. The annual market size of pesticides for the treatment of rice blast blight and gluteal wilt of rice is approximately 3 billion yen. The Agricultural Technology Research Institute plans to make the proportion of biopesticides account for 10% of the pesticide market.
